Fish add vibrancy and life to your pond. They are perfect additions to any pond or water features. Here are the few things you should consider when adding fish to your water features.

1. Fish enjoys shade over direct sunlight. Placing your waterfall or pond in a location that has direct exposure to sun may not be the best choice for health of the fish.

2. Pool depth is critical when it comes to adding fish to your water feature. A typical Koi pond should not be shallower than 20 inches. Ideally, a Koi pond is about 30 to 40 inches deep. However, it should certainly have shallow edges for feeding the fish and watching their beauty shine through the water.

3. The purpose of having ideal depth of about 20 inches is to meet the temperature needs of fish. For example, during hot weather, fish prefers to hide in deep waters to avoid the hot surface water. Similarly, during cold weather, Koi fish go deeper in the water when the surface water freezes. They need to hide in the deeper ends of the water to escape animals like cat or raccoon.

4. A Koi pond requires some type of pump for aerating and filtering the impurities in the water. There needs to be something in place to check and maintain the ammonia composition of water.

5. Fish need oxygen. In order for fish to be healthy, it needs to absorb sufficient amount oxygen from the water passing through their gills. To make sure that they’ll get the needed amount of air, the surface area of pond needs to be as large as possible. Adding a fountain or waterfall aids in aerating the pond, which in turn results in healthy life quality for the fish. A small air pump can aid in aeration as well.

6. Filtration is one of the best ways to deal with ammonia. Natural filtration can be achieved by adding plants like hyacinths. Mechanical filtration by using zeolite is an alternative.

7. The best time to introduce new fish to the pond is late spring or early summer. When introducing new fish to the pond, consider placing them in quarantine pool for three to four weeks. This helps in monitoring the fish for any unusual diseases or allergic reactions.

8. Most of the fishes can only eat small amount at a time. It is important to add lot of water plants if you plan on creating a self-sustaining eco-system. A balanced pond contains a lot of water plants, some insects, algae – all which are edible by fish. A typical Koi fish needs to be fed by about 5 minutes.

A Backyard Fish Pond

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Water gardens and backyard ponds are for butterflies, frogs, birds, fish, you, and the whole family. These ponds may be small, may even be no larger than 3 to 4 feet in diameter. These may be built in patio containers and barrels. Drawing wildlife in your backyard may be done by adding water gardens and ponds. These will not only provide enjoyment and interest but also a natural and relaxing environment as well.

A fish pond in your backyard may become the focal point of your backyard conversation. So spice it up with this tips and techniques.

Where to Put Up a Backyard Pond

Place your fish pond in a place where you can best view it from, whether from a deck or the patio. Make it coincide with the natural surroundings. Do not place the pond where the sun can overheat it. Nestle it in a shaded place but not under the trees.

Landscaping

It is best to slightly elevate the soil surrounding the pond so that excess water will not enter into it.
Plan the drainage system of the pond, making sure that it draws the water away from your house.

Landscaping the surroundings around your pond will provide a natural dwelling place for birds and frogs that need water and land. Make sure that electricity is available if you plan to use lights, filters, or a water re-circulating device.

Do not place the pond under the trees to avoid fallen leaves into the pond. This technique will also provide less maintenance to the pond. Expose the pond to sufficient sunlight only since some aquatic plats grow well in full sun and others do not.

Using Pond Liners

Pond liners are used to keep water from leaking into the soil. It is almost always necessary for ponds even if it they are situated in clay soils. Pond liners come in different shapes and sizes. They even include built in waterfalls or any design based on your preferences. They are durable and convenient.

Consider a polyvinyl chloride liner (PVC liner) in building larger ponds. In determining the size of the
PVC, you have to know the maximum length, width, and depth of the pond. After which, multiply the maximum depth by 3. Add the answer to the width and the length. Now you have enough PVC to securely hold down the pond edges.

Pond liners come in different thickness as well. The thicker the pond liner, the more resistant it is to
punctures. Cement may be considered an optional pool liner. However, it requires more expertise to install and it may cost more than the regular plastic pond liner.

However, considering that many ponds are quite small, other plastics may be used. It may be cheaper but many may break down easily once prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light happens. Some plastics also may prove to be toxic to fish.

Pond Installation

Time your pond building when the ground is not overly wet or frozen. Dig the hole according to the right depth and place (and secure) the pond liner. Then landscape the pond surroundings. Remove any rocks from the surrounding area. Add water, plants, and a pump. Let the pond sit for a few days before adding plants and fish. Let the plants settle for at least one week before placing the fish.

Then sit back and enjoy your backyard fish pond!

How Not To Build Koi Fish Ponds

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As the hobby of Koi-keeping becomes more popular, so the building of Koi fish ponds in people?s backyards has seen a rise in numbers over recent years. The chance to own and care for these beautiful sociable creatures entices many to start, what often turns out to be, a life-long hobby. In this article, as a beginner Koi enthusiast, you will learn a few what-not-to-dos when it comes to Koi pond building.

Remember, first of all, that once Koi fish ponds are built, they are permanent structures so careful thought and planning beforehand are crucial to the success of constructing Koi ponds. Do not, for example, choose a location where the entire Koi fish pond will be exposed to direct sunlight all the time. Koi fish ponds need to be shady but not completely in the dark so don?t build them next to large trees either.

Keep in mind that Koi fish are capable of growing to enormous sizes. A mature Koi has a length of about 36 inches but some have been known to grow even bigger than this. Whatever you do, avoid building a small pond or you will live to regret it! The size of your Koi fish pond needs to take into account the length these fish will grow as well as the number of Koi you intend to keep.

In addition, do not build a shallow Koi pond and think that this will be adequate. Shallow waters make Koi easy prey to predators like the blue heron but also it can cause large sudden changes in water temperature. The latter is harmful to Koi as it will cause the fish undue stress which will reduce their immune system and in turn make them vulnerable to viruses and infections. Therefore, for the purpose of Koi protection from predators as well as to keep pond water temperature stable, the recommended depth of a Koi fish pond is a minimum of 4 feet.

Speaking of predators, help to protect your beloved Koi by also making sure that the sides of the pond are built vertically steep and smooth. Avoid opting for ledges around the sides of the pond as raccoons have been known to use ledges to help them wade into the water and steal dinner for themselves.

Do not build a Koi fish pond without also building a quarantine tank where you can monitor new Koi fish for signs of illness prior to introducing them to the actual pond. A separate tank can also act as a hospital area for treating Koi when they are sick or injured.

Keep the shape of Koi fish ponds simple ? either round, square or rectangle. These shapes are easiest to clean via a filter. Do not think about building a Koi pond without installing a (preferably large) filtration system. Koi produces a lot of metabolic waste on a day-to-day basis which must be removed efficiently to keep the pond water as clean and clear as possible. This is vital to maintaining the health of these fish.

Koi fish ponds will also need a pump to move the water through the filters, an ultraviolet steriliser to stop algae from turning the water green, a pond water aerator and a pond heater. Without the latter, you may well end up losing a few Koi fish at the end of every cold winter.

Happy Koi-keeping!

I bought a small fish pond that has a fountain. Problem is that I don’t have an outdoor plug-in outlet. I have a crawl space and could possible run the extension cord under the house. I’m not sure where/how I would run the extension cable through the floor?
