Why Is My Pond Pump Using More Electricity?

I have a blagdon solid handling pond pump, over the last few days i have lost about 8 pounds in electricity, so i tried unplugging many things but when i unplugged the fish pond then the electricity stopped going down as fast. Why would the pump use so much electricity?

There is probably a short or something seriously wrong with the pump. Test the water to see if there is electricity in the water. How old is the pump ? Also, check to see what the GPH rating of the pump is and then look online to see what it is supposed to be using.
